Integrated information theory ( IIT ) attempts to identify the essential properties of consciousness ( axioms ) and from there , infers the properties of physical systems that can account for it ( postulates ) .
Integrated Information Theory ( IIT ) of consciousness says that information being processed is conscious if a Mathematical quantity called ฮฆ ( Phi ) is large . Phi quantifies integration , the extent to which information is interconnected into a unified whole rather than split into disconnected parts .
Christof Koch , one of the world's leading experts on consciousness , went to a monastery in India to discuss that question ( about consciousness ) with a group of Buddhist monks . Koch and the Dalai Lama debated neuroscience and mind for a full day .
We live in culture dominated by two contrived metaphysical inferences : That the world exists outside consciousness and that particular arrangements of matter in that world somehow generate consciousness .
Can Integrated Information Theory explain consciousness ? How does matter make mind ? More specifically , how does a physical object generate subjective experiences like those you are immersed in as you read this sentence ?
Consciousness , I regard , as a fundamental . I regard matter as derivative from consciousness . We cannot get behind consciousness . Everything that we talk about , everything that we regard as existing postulates consciousness .
