Today , I happened to see a copy of a magazine — Sat Updesh — as if it came floating in the air .
It contained " A letter to the Emperor Rama " . I laughed heartily at it . However , I am answering the questions posed therein .

QUESTION : Is it necessary for a saint to put on ochre coloured robes ?
RAMA : We often find a devoted heart under the coloured garb . It is also true that the GOD-intoxicated persons may generally be found in coloured garments . But , saintliness does not necessarily depend on coloured robes .
The real freedom of a person is in no way limited to any particular cult , religion or fashion .
Saintliness may be found in very high placed dignitaries , residing in grand palaces , and also in very poor persons , living in the humble huts .
The sun of freedom shines both on the high peaks of the sacred Himalayas , covered with snow , and the dirty waters in ditches and ponds .
When this light penetrates the strong prison walls , the unbreakable steel chains fall to pieces .
Such a GOD-intoxicated one roams about freely and fearlessly in the prison of this world dark with ignorance .
The sounds produced by the hoofs of the blue horse of such a saint is heard even in the eighth heaven .
People may be humming in the crowded streets below or they may be busy on the terrace above , yet the saint , studying any religious book in some corner , is not at all disturbed , lost in studies .
The saint is , as if , in seclusion , even though one may be in the thick of the hubbub , peacefully enjoying the solitude of a forest in the midst of hectic activity .

The saint is going all alone . It is moonlit night or the dawn , and the pleasant breeze is blowing softly . All of a sudden , one feels that someone has joined one .
Who is it ? It is none else but the One without-a-second .
And , lo ! The saint is immediately lost in Divine ecstasy .
One might be traveling all alone in a railway compartment with all the rattling sound of the running wheels .
There might be none to talk to one , but no sooner than one shuts down the windows of the eyes , the Beloved quietly enters the heart and one is completely lost in meditation to enjoy the true delight or spiritual bliss .
A Hindi poet says :
" Those , who are lost in Self , throw away all their worries and anxieties in the Ganga or Divine Knowledge . "

QUESTION : Does one become a saint by putting on ochre coloured garb ?
RAMA : Saint is one who is ever imbued with Divine Knowledge , so much so that one has no pride left , not even of being a saint .
One has no hatred against the modern inventions , nor any special love for antiquity .
The whole world is enlightened by one's Divine Light , so as to illume the path of progress .
If it is not so , one is like green fuel , which , on being burnt , gives only choking smoke to the annoyance of others .
Unless the fuel is dry , it will neither be ignited nor give light to others .
So , too , is the case with the saints .
If heart is not coloured ( changed ) , there is no use colouring the clothes . One can neither be useful to oneself nor of any good to others .
They say that before being ignited by the fire of Divine Knowledge , it is necessary for one to dry oneself ( like fuel wood ) by doing good deeds and living the dedicated and devotional way of life .
But Rama says that it is enough for the green fuel to be near the fire . It will , then , automatically be made dry in course of time .
It means that it is enough for those who have already taken to saintly life to remain in close contact with those of Divine Knowledge .
The mere company of such ones is sure to make them real saints .
But , let the small plants grow . If they do not attain the proper growth , they cannot be suitably fit for being used as good fuel .
The woolen cloth is made out of wool derived from the sheep . But let the wool first grow on the body of the sheep .
If , however , there is no wool on the sheep , how can you make woolen cloth ?

Similarly , those persons whose thoughts are not yet mature are like tender plants . They are fit neither to be cut nor to be used as fuel .
Just as , if there is no wool on the body of a sheep , we cannot usefully utilize it .
So , too , the immature persons have to be allowed to develop maturity by following the path of righteous living in order to purify their hearts .
Let them first taste the results of their actions and , realize the unreality of the worldly attractions .
They will automatically turn towards the right path of renunciation and knowledge .
You know that the plant will grow according to the quality of its seed .
Lord Krishna saw that Arjuna had had the inner desire of " taking revenge " , but due to transitory sentiments , succumbed to the feelings of piety and narrow notions of " duty " . Arjuna was wavering and failed to decide what should be done and what not .
The seeds to know the Truthful path were engrained in Arjuna . Lord Krishna could clearly see this and , therefore , turned Arjuna away from temporary emotional thoughts of piety and prepared Arjuna , in accordance with deep rooted inherent tendency , to fight the enemies .
Well ! If you have eaten croton seeds , why should you have any objection , now , to face the consequences ?

Similar is the case with the present day Indians in respect of facing the consequences of their past deeds . They entertain in their hearts the desires ( seeds ) of the twentieth century AD , yet they aspire to get the fruits of the twentieth century BC .
This is not possible . It is quite certain that you will have to suffer the consequences of your acts which emanate from your desires .
If we do not entertain the desires which are fulfilled by performing Rajsuya , Ashwamedha , Puran Mash , Agni Shtom and other old rituals ( yajnas ) , we need not celebrate them .
Today , we need to save ourselves from the exploitation of the advanced countries of Europe , America , Japan , Germany etc .
As such , India must exert itself to learn the knowhow of the western arts and industries , so that it may overcome the ever increasing shortage of necessities .
The Karma Kanda ( ritualistic custom ) has been changing with the times from country to country and will continue to change accordingly .
But Atma , the Reality , is immutable and unchangeable . Its Knowledge will , therefore , ever remain the same .
Those who are successful in discharging their duties wholeheartedly , according to their innate tendencies , in a selfless way , alone are entitled to acquire Divine Knowledge ( Please study the Bhagwad Geeta ) .
