|| THIRD OBSTACLE ( SELFISHNESS & FALSEHOOD ) ||

The spirit of Upasana or devotion is self-surrender . If it is not there , the Upasana is useless and lifeless .

Everybody wants some return . So long as you do not hand over your selfishness and egoism to GOD , GOD will ever remain beyond your grasp , nothing to say of being near you , just as Lord Krishna evaded Kal Yavan * .

The great Hindi poet , Surdas , who , though blind , had an enlightened heart and a Divine vision , has well said :—

" Who has named You Govinda ! You always believe in give and take but , unfortunately , this could not be done by me .

You made Sudama a rich person because Sudama offered You rice . You protected Dropadi because Dropadi offered cloth to You . You liberated the elephant ( from the clutches of the crocodile ) because the elephant offered flower to You .

But , when it happened to be the turn of Surdas , You have become hard-hearted and have turned deaf ears . O my lord , who has given You the name of Govinda ? "

However , if you want to test whether there is any good result from Upasana or not , then remember that your devotion for test is irrelevant and impossible , because sincere devotion will be the one in which the devotee and also the result ( of devotion ) are both surrendered to GOD like offering to the sacred fire .

Tulsi Das , the great Hindi poet says :—

" O my lord ! My prayer unto You is that I may not put any faith or hope in anyone else except You .

Take away from me my ignorance . I do not aspire for good status , good intellect , wealth or power to perform miracles or to have good reputation .

I would only request You kindly to see that my selfless devotion to Your feet may increase from day to day . "

If you say ,

" What is the enjoyment is self-surrender ? It is only self-effacement . Nobody wants one's own effacement . "

In answer to such a question , it can only be said ,

" Such a questioner has never had any taste of true enjoyment . It must be kept in mind that annihilation of egoism itself is enjoyment .

When a baby puts the small body with the innocent mind in the lap of the parent , a baby gets all the comforts of the universe and all worries are gone .

Whatsoever may happen , tempest , heavy rains , earthquake or any other calamity , one has nothing to worry about . Nothing can harm one . One has nothing to fear . What a sweet lap does one have and how fresh is one , when one gets up ! "
